How to Create and Manage Segments

Here you will see how to create custom segments about your audience.

Open the Segment Editor

To create a new segment in the MVMCloud Analytics dashboard, you need to click the All Visits button in the data selector section shown below. This button's text label is always set to the current segment, which in this case includes all site visitors.

Clicking the segment selector opens a drop-down menu that provides the list of available segments, including the default All Visits, as well as any custom segments shared with you or that you created. To start creating a new segment, click the big button Add new Segment, which will load the segment editor.

Defining the Segment

You can start creating the segment using the editor shown below. Start by adding a clear, descriptive name that you will use to identify your segment. For example, Returning Customers or Visitors, as shown below.

To define exactly which group of visitors will appear in the segment, you will need to create a filter based on your users' elements collected and visit data. You can even combine more than one filter with an OR/AND logic flow.

You can review the available criteria that can be used to define a segment by clicking the initial drop-down field in the first row. You can identify this field as it will indicate Actions on Visit by default; however, clicking it will display the following list in a box.

Types of segment

There are too many options available to cover in this article, so you should spend some time exploring the list of segment filters to find out. all of them. If you already know exactly what you want to filter, you can use the search box to find the relevant user or visit data. You can also see a list of all available segment filters here.

After you select a dimension to target, for example, Visit Location > Country or Visitors > Visit Type, you need to define the criteria filtering. You may notice a small question mark next to many of the filtering criteria. Hovering over these icons will display a full description of the relevant matching criteria.

Tips on segments

When you start typing a value in one of the text boxes for the filtering criteria, MVMCloud Analytics suggests the options available in the dataset. You can click on these suggestions whenever possible to ensure correct formatting and avoid potential typos.

After you finish creating your filter criteria, you can press the TEST button to open a record of all visits matching the your segment. If the details look correct, you can close the visit log pop-up and click the Save and Apply button at the bottom of the segment editor.
