Page Transitions
MVMCloud Analytics provides a report that shows what your visitors have done directly before and after viewing a certain page. This page will explain how to access, understand, and use the powerful Page Transitions report.
Page Transitions Report
You can start it from the Behavior >> Transitions or Behavior >> Page Titles menu. When you move the mouse over a table row, two icons are shown. Click the icon to open Transitions for this row:
The displayed report contains data for the period selected in the date picker.
Understanding the Page Transitions Report
In the center, you see general statistics about the page where you started the Transition.
*The first number is the number of page views for this specific page. Hover over the number to see the share of all page views. * You can also hover over other numbers to see the groups' share. * On the sides of the box in the center, you see what visitors did directly before and after visiting the page in the center.
The height of the connections to the box in the center is proportional to the amount of traffic that traveled this route.
On the left side, you can see where users came from.
- From Internal Pages (From U=Internal Pages) means that visitors came to the page at the center of other pages on your site. This can be done through links in the content or navigation;
- The From Search Engines group shows how many people came from external search engines, like Google, directly to the central page. You can click “From search engines” to expand the group and see the keywords that were used;
- From websites shows which external websites are linked directly to the page in the center. You can also expand this group by clicking on it to see the links that direct visitors to the page;
- There is also a From Campaigns group that is not visible in the screenshot because there are no such references in the example. This group shows how many visitors triggered a campaign when they entered the center page;
- From Internal Search lists the keywords your visitors searched for on your internal search engine, and then clicked on the page (learn more about Internal Site Search);
- The Direct Entries group shows visits that started on this page, that is, the visitor used the page as a home page.
The right side shows what users did after visiting the hub page.
- To Internal Pages means that visitors went to a different page on your site after visiting the central page;
- Internal Searches list all the keywords that visitors started searching for when they were on the central page;
- When people click on a download or an external link on the page, this is shown in the Downloads and External Links groups;
- The Exits group shows visits that ended on this page, that is, no further actions were tracked for the visitor.
The last element is the Page Reload group at the bottom. A page reload means loading the page several times in a row.
Using and Interacting with the Transitions Report
There are several ways to interact with the Transitions report.
- You can open and close groups by clicking on their title or on the corresponding line in the central box;
- Transitions show additional information about various parts in pop-up when you move the mouse;
- You can click the pages in From Internal Pages and To Internal Pages to reload the Transitions to a different page;
- The current state of the popover is part of the URL. This means you can use your browser's Back and Forward buttons to navigate; Additionally, you can send the link to someone else and the Transitions popover will open for the page you were viewing when you copied the URL.
Conclusion
When designing Transitions, we made some deliberate choices that distinguish it from similar Clickpath features. It's not focused on the path, instead it shows transitions across a page – hence the name. With this feature, you can see everything that happened before and after a page, not just the inner page views.
This information is very difficult to find in other tools, so we hope you enjoy the easy analysis with MVMCloud Analytics and have fun using Transitions!
